So here’s the thing—I’m going to take an indefinite hiatus from blogging on Le Style Du Jour.
Because—I’m taking my own advice as a marketer and I’m going to focus on one thing (www.witsbitch.blogspot.com) and try to make it great (or at least great in my mind). As opposed to writing a couple blogs half-assedly.
Plus—I’m totally in awe of several well-established style, fashion and beauty blogs out there and I respect those women way too much to water down the category even more with my mediocre postings.
This means--My Wit’s Bitch readers will be subjected (on occasion) to my rantings and ravings about style-related issues, fashion crimes and totally fabulous shoes. I think you’ll all live despite this overt abuse of power.

RedEnvelope Gifts On Sale
RedEnvelope.com is having a Summer sale and there are some good buys!
I love the selection of gifts at RedEnvelope, but many of them are quite pricey. I've learned to wait for sales so I can stock up on stylish gifts for men and women without spending a fortune.
Here are a few fabulous items I spied in the preview:

Too much to ask?
As I slathered on lotion the other day I imagined the perfect do-it-all body care solution. Here’s what I decided I want to see in one body product—as if this were even possible (hey, a girl can dream right?):
- Self-tanner
- Anti-cellulite, firming
- Anti-aging
- Slow or stop hair growth
- Moisturizing
- Velvety smooth, not sticky
- Subtle shimmer
- No rub-off onto clothing
- Long lasting
- Customizable or variety of scents, no stink factor
- Affordable
I’d be happy if I could even get all these features in a combination of two products—shower gel (firming & anti-aging) and body lotion (tanning & slowing hair growth)—and both in the scents I like. Realistic or not, I’m going to hold out hope.
What’s your dream product?

Dresses and a Rant
The Dress: InStyle magazine, June 2008 cover shot of Cameron Diaz wearing a Marc Jacobs dress.

My Rant: This Marc Jacobs dress has delicate floral details cascading down a splash of lavender--which intrigues me, but all I see every single time I look at the cover is the damn ZIPPER down the side of the dress! What the hell? It’s not even like the zipper is some fantastic design element. Am I wrong?
Okay, rant over, I feel better now.
On a lighter note—I’m sure you know by now that trends in clothing this summer include cute dresses, bright colors and graphic prints. Well, I stumbled upon a creation by Christian Lacroix that actually showcases all three trends.

Surprising, bold, not a look for everyone, but stunning. Use this as inspiration the next time you shop for a fun summery dress. You can find inexpensive dresses everywhere this year—places like Old Navy, Forever21, Target, H&M, Ann Taylor Loft and department stores. Dresses make getting ready in the summer a snap; keeping you cool and comfortable.
For more inspiration on a complete look with a bright dress, visit InStyle.com (and I promise you won’t see just the zipper on this one).

Nailing It
Neons. Brights. No matter what you call them, the newest nail colors this summer make a bold statement. I’m just not sure what they’re saying.
Maybe because I grew up wearing the tragic neon clothing of the 80s I’m a little hesitant to try the nail colors that have flooded the market.
Maybe because I grew up wearing the tragic neon clothing of the 80s I’m a little hesitant to try the nail colors that have flooded the market.
All the major (and minor) brands have them. Here's a look at Essie's The Neons and OPI's The Brights:

Perhaps age is a factor for me in how I view these colors. I saw a cashier (a teenage girl) at Staples who had a bright yellow color on her nails. It didn't phase me and looked kinda cute (except it was all chipping off). But if I saw a 50+ woman wearing a bright green nail polish I might do a double-take and wonder what the hell she was thinking.
Considering I'm on the brink of what some people would call "old" I shouldn't talk. I've had unusual colored nails before, but I'm cautious with the neons/brights. I like the purples and blues, but I think most of the others make my already pale skin look more anemic.
If you've got a dark complexion or a beautiful tan, you can probably wear any of the colors you like best and look great (I'm jealous). Just keep the nails short with these colors, otherwise it gets kinda creepy looking.
Tell me what you think of the trend or if you're currently wearing any of these bright colors. I'd love to know!

Miu Miu
Okay, I admit it--I’m practically foaming at the mouth! Rue La La is prepping a special nighttime boutique for MIU MIU!

Ohhhhh I wish I had the budget for a new handbag! Here’s the thing, a piece (a gigantic piece) of my heart will always belong to Coach (I’m not even sure why), but if I had to choose a close second and third it would be Prada (for their luscious leather bags, usually the trendier designs, like the yummy ombre bags this year) and Miu Miu (for the hipper, wilder, less structured look in lux leather).

The Spring/Summer 2008 Miu Miu bag I'm currently coveting:

Miu Miu clothes, shoes and handbags usually have a unique, youthful look all their own. They push the envelope and the designs probably aren’t for everyone, but maybe that’s why I like the brand. Not sure if the selections on Rue La La will reflect that edge but it’s worth a little browse time. See you there?

Too Much Summer Skin
I'm not a prude (far from it), but seriously people, there really is such a thing as showing too much skin in public--regardless of age, body size or sex (and I don't mean whether you're getting any sex or not, I mean this applies to women AND men).

Guys, what is with you taking off your shirts in public places? And wearing low slung pants that show off your plumber assets? This gets old even on the sexiest of men; it's trashy not classy.

Ladies, we can be the worst offenders of all (recall the Britney Spears no panties money shots?). Tell me, what is the point of wearing a skirt, skort or shorts so skimpy in length that your butt cheeks hang out? While some men may enjoy this look other women generally think it's tacky.
I believe you can show some skin and still look classy, just don't show all of it at once. And if you're not sure how to do that, just follow this rule--anything that looks like it might end up on someone's Flickr account as a "Fashion Faux Pas"--don't do that!
What do you think?

Yes, I know summertime is hot and you want to be as comfortable as possible, but the rest of us would like to be comfortable in your presence (I hate cringing at the sight of another person, but if tempted I will instinctively show my disdain).
Don't get me wrong, there are times and places where it's totally appropriate to show lots of skin--like the beach, the pool, on a boat, at a water park, the strip club or in the privacy of your own home. But trust me, when John Q. Public is eating at a restaurant, shopping or just going for a walk in the park, he/she does not want to see your ass crack, butt cheeks, your dunlap stomach and especially not your junk. I offer as evidence the following photos:

The All Natural Dirt on Aveda

Is Aveda Really More Natural? (click to see full article)
Brains bottom line:
Aveda produces good, high quality products, but they are no more natural or good for you than anything else you can buy. They have some environmental stances that are laudable which may help make you feel better about buying them. But these marketing shenanigans sure make me lose faith in them.
Well, my faith in Aveda can't be shaken by claiming 'marketing shenanigans'. Here’s why I adore their hair products, regardless of how “natural” the ingredients are:
- They have a fresh, organic scent; not some fakey perfume smell.
- There are great shampoo, conditioner and styling formulas to suit a wide variety of hair types and overcome challenges; color conserving, enhancing curly or straight, volumizing, ultra-moisturizing, smoothing and humidity fighting, and more!
- The hair sprays always wash out clean; I’ve never had any of them build-up on my hair and they don't make the strands rubbery or brittle.
- The products have always helped my hair remain healthy despite every kind of cruel treatment I’ve put it through over the years (Aveda even tamed my mom’s frizzy, dry, course hair and now it looks great!).
- The styling products can be mixed and matched to create just the right level of control for your hair and styling needs. They also completely wash out without build-up.
There are a few other specific Aveda products that I highly recommend to others:
- Blue Oil Balancing Concentrate It’s a muscle soothing, tension relieving oi
l that comes in a little roll-on bottle and is meant for use on pulse points, temples, areas of tension and sore muscles. I swear by it to help relieve tension and sinus headaches
- Hand and Foot Relief The hand lotion is wonderfully moisturizing (great to use when you need a hand massage) and the foot cream is fabulously cool and refreshing for tired or dry feet.
- Pure Abundance Hair Potion This is an awesome light powder that adds volume to the hair and provides the ability to style like “second day hair.” I can attest to the fact that it works great!

It is true that Aveda products aren’t cheap, but I get a unique, top-quality, effective product for the money. Aveda, I’m still your advocate and addict!

Target is partnering with renowned accessories designer Monica Botkier to launch a limited-edition handbag collection, Botkier for Target. This collection is the fifth handbag launch in a series of limited-time-only accessories designers at Target. The Botkier for Target collection will be available at select Target stores nationwide and at Target.com July 21 through Sept. 14, 2008. Until then, here's a sneak peek at the collection.
Personally, I'm beginning to bore of the whole metallic-bag-for-day trend. But if you're determined to go there, then the bronze and rose gold numbers below might just do the trick. I like how they look soft and slouchy, which helps offset the bling factor. I still love metallics for evening, though, and am really looking forward to seeing the clutches (above right) in person. What do you think of Botkier for Target so far?

Color Fail
Two trends (bright colors and tights) walk into this bar . . . sounds like a joke right? Well, if you’re a woman of my age (let’s just say that’s over 35 and skip the details) putting those two trends together, ON YOUR LEGS, can be a joke.
Selecting which fashion trends to follow can be tricky business, particularly as you age. And, I’ll admit, I still feel 29 so there are times when I’m tempted to dress like a twenty-something. Fortunately there are gentle and not so gentle reminders (comments from friends, what not to wear TV shows, magazine tips, etc.) that not all trends are meant for ALL women. Age, size, shape, coloring—all should be factored in; but I know personally that my better judgment can easily be blinded by something “cute”. So, if all else fails, use of a MIRROR before walking out the door should be your stop-gap.
I found a prime example of when it’s appropriate and when it’s a fashion fail for a woman to wear brightly colored tights or leggings. This feature is from MSN’s Lifestyle section:

Light or bright-colored leggings: White leggings or ones in any candy-colored shade, are best left to the teenaged set. Not only will light colors call attention to your lower half (and make even shapely legs look heavy), but it’s just not a very sophisticated style choice. On the other hand, Krupp gives the thumbs-up to dark leggings. “Black leggings worn under a dress that’s just a little too short or too sheer to wear alone looks youthful without looking too young,” she says. And you don’t have to opt only for black—any dark color (black, brown, dark gray or navy) is an all age-appropriate choice.

Extreme Shoes
I have found my shoe Mecca—the BATA Shoe Museum in Toronto, Canada. I must, at some point, make my way there to bask in the glow of glorious SHOES! (Me? A fanatic? Yup!)
I wish I could beam myself there right now. One of the current exhibits is, On Pointe: The Rise of the Ballet Shoe. I love ballet and have previously read about the evolution of the Pointe (or Toe) shoe. It’s interesting if you’re an arts geek like me.
But today I thought I would share some pics of the more extreme contemporary designs for women’s high heels. These pictures were taken at the museum and kindly shared on Flickr.

That's Hot, Dawg!
Dogs have always been extremely popular pets, but they can easily become trendy accessories (and not always in a good way). Let’s face it there are dogs in this country that have bigger, better, more expensive wardrobes and bling than you or I.
As a cat owner I’m a bit out of the loop on the endless selection of doggy apparel, so I was highly amused when I found—the Doggie Bikini. The bikini selection at TrendyPuppy.com includes the red or black Hawaiian, the blue embroidered daisy, the purple polka dot, the pink rhinestone and my personal favorite—the skirted Hawaiian!

Even I admit--that look is super cute (that Pug really sells it)! It’s funny, useless, a bit strange but ultimately adorable. It definitely made me smile.
If you love to dress up your pooch, please minimize possible humiliation. Fashion disasters can happen to dogs too.

Yikes! Some looks are muy loco no matter whether they’re on a dog or dame.
BTW, you can check out the ten most popular breed of dogs in the 50 largest US cities on the AKC site. Pretty cool.

Some style secrets shouldn't be shared

I’ve quoted some of craziest ones for you and couldn’t resist noting my reactions. Ridiculous as they may seem, be assured I’m NOT making this shit up. You can check out all the comments yourself.
If your hair is really oily, wash your hair with dawn soap and it takes the oil righ out! I should know I do karate all the time so my hair is always oliy! :)
Um, maybe that’s called SWEAT? Either way your hair should be breaking off in dry brittle chunks any day now. Please consult a professional!
my style sert is....... curl! hey are cute ansd can help define a look. if you don't own a curlng ron or rolles jut use dab of gel and scrunch. use eadban t rus them off yor fac. hey an be annoing=:) PEAC OUT!
Did ya burn your fingers on the “curlng ron”? Cuz ur missin sum letrs. But at least she’s looking cute in curls.
clothes: my style goal is to stand out so i always shop at desginer place get clothes that cost alot of money but not preppy just because i am a white girl i go to a spainsh school so i i get clothes that fit in but stand out how else do you think im popular beauty: i love to get messages one way i keep my beauty is i try not to get upset or anrgy or stressed because that can cause zits. i was my face three times a day i take skin cream and put it on my face
OMG! This chick gives girls a bad name. And that name is STUCK UP BITCH. Kid you have no class, no matter how many designer outfits you own. Get over yourself! Style is more than wearing certain labels.
everyone needs a cute hate
Yes, cuz despising others is adorable! On the other hand, yes a HAT can be cute.
I'm the queen of accessories and you could never ever leav the house with out it use your bracelets the biggest earrings you have ,rings, hills, persus, anklelets, polish, fakenails, any type of accessories that match your outfit, and hair accessoris that match you outfit tooo DAZZLE IT UP A BIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Holy crap! I bet you can see this girl’s big earrings and her gazillion other accessories from a mile away. Always edit your look; we want to see you not just the bling.
I guess this goes to show you that there are a million different definitions of style. And that’s okay. But the older I get, the more I realize that best case scenario, style should positively reflect your physical assets, character, and values (a sparkling personality, intellect, sensuality, humor, and self-respect are great accessories).

Gunning for Style
I have a tasteful crush on Tim Gunn. He’s the man of style; formerly with Parsons The New School for Design in New York City, design mentor on Project Runway, star of Tim Gunn’s Guide to Style and chief creative officer of Liz Claiborne Inc.
Tim Gunn is always impeccable; his look is remarkably refined, perfectly assembled with attention to every detail, and fitted with laser-like precision. It’s been said of him before, and it bears repeating—he is a STYLE GURU. And I adore him, right down to his patented, “Make it work” quip on Project Runway.

I’m thrilled there are certain descriptions that will never be associated with Gunn’s style: cheap, punk, redneck, grunge, androgynous, hip-hop, or street. I’m glad he’s classy and not edgy. There seem to be too few men who can pull-off elegant style without looking either too Donald Trump gray suit conservative or too Sean (P.Diddy) Combs shiny suit trendy.
I respect Gunn’s aesthetic sensibilities and fashion advice. I wish he could be my personal style mentor. Although I’m guessing that would mean I’d have to lose these comfy but crappy duds and look human again. Yeah, that’s probably not going to happen today. Tim, I promise I’ll pencil ya in real soon.

Workin' the Workout Gear
When I actually get the motivation to workout, I always feel better about myself if I’m not wearing my crappiest t-shirt and cropped pants with paint on them. For me, investing in some nicer pieces is beneficial.
Going to the gym isn’t like starring in a designer fashion show. When I was a member of Gold’s Gym I found it irritating that some women seemed to be there to show off their T&A and flaunt their apparel. Whatever. I just want to feel comfortable and not self-conscious.
If I had unlimited disposable income I would probably go for some of the hottest new gear and famous label sporty wear, but I honestly don’t think there’s a need for Chanel brand hand weights. Seriously, who does? There are plenty of other things I rather drop mucho dinero on—handbags, shoes, jewelry, watches. . .
But, just for fun, check out these extravagant items straight from the pages of ELLE.

1. GRAPHITE TENNIS RACQUET, $595, FELT TENNIS BALL, $350 FOR A SET OF FOUR, BOTH, CHANEL
2. COTTON-LINEN TANK TOP, LACOSTE, $85, VISIT
LACOSTE.COM3. SPANDEX SCUBA TANK TOP, ETRO, $335, AT ETRO, LAS VEGAS
4. NEOPRENE AND IRON WEIGHTS, CHANEL, $760 FOR A SET OF TWO, AT SELECT CHANEL BOUTIQUES
5. PATENT TENNIS BAG, BALLY, $1,095, AT BALLY, BEVERLY HILLS
6. PLEATED CHIFFON SKIRT, D&G, $395, VISIT DOLCEGABBANA.IT
7. SNEAKERS, PUMA, $90, VISIT PUMA.COM
Fortunately you don’t need all those labels (and their hefty price tags) to look good at the gym, on the tennis court or in kickboxing class. At least not in the world where most of us live!
I’ve actually had very good luck finding durable, attractive, reasonably priced workout clothing at Target stores,Activasports.com and ChampionUSA.com. These shops carry a nice size selection (Activasports.com even carries petite and tall length workout/yoga pants; very hard to find) And, their gear is made for performance, not just looks!
Oh, and a few months back I bought the cutest shimmery pink and silver Nike gym bag from ebags.com. It’s just the right size to fit in those crazy size lockers at the gym. And, I got compliments from a couple of the trainers. (I might suck at the workouts, but I rock the accessories!)
I’d love to know if you have favorite shops for sports gear or have found some great deals.
Look good and feel good ladies!

Makes Cents to Me
If you've never checked out the site Cents of Style by Andy Paige, it’s worth a look see. She offers tips and tricks for looking like a million bucks without spending a fortune. There’s even a small shopping section with very reasonably priced accessories.
My favorite part of the site, without question, is her version of “dos and don’ts” of style. Appropriately it’s called“Ugh. . .don’t do that!”
Here’s one of my favorites, it’s such a pet peeve of mine—the muffin top. Unfortunately this isn’t even the worst I’ve seen. It seems to be an epidemic among young women these days.

Andy’s list has many more great reminders of what not to do and suggestions on how to improve your look. Check it out.

Honoring YSL
No style blog would be complete this week without acknowledging the passing of famous designer, Yves Saint Laurent.
At age 17, Saint Laurent started his career in haute couture at the famous fashion house of Christian Dior. In 1957 when Dior died suddenly, Saint Laurent was named head of the House of Dior (at 21 I could barely sell clothes never mind run a house of couture and design amazing high fashion). Then in 1962 he and a partner started the YSL label.
He was well-known for popularizing the beatnik look, safari jackets and tuxedo suit for women. His swingy little trapeze dresses were cute, but nothing compared to the ultra sexy "le smoking" suit shown below (fabulous! the epitome of sultry!).

Over the years Saint Laurent was seen as a scandalous figure (posing nude to promote his perfume, suffering depression, abusing drugs—shocking back then but nothing compared to today’s celebs) and yet a national treasure (he was awarded the Legion d'Honneur in France). In 1983, He was the first living designer to be honored with a show at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Despite its ups and downs over the years, including the 2002 closing of the couture house, the YSL brand still lives on today under the parent company Gucci Group (which also includes high end brands like Bottega Veneta, Balenciaga, Alexander McQueen and more). In October 2007 the YSL brand website opened its online shopping to the US market (knock yourselves out America!).
I for one am grateful for Yves Saint Laurent’s fashion contributions, without them there may not be women’s pant suits as we know and love them today, and that my friends, would truly be a fashion tragedy.

Stick and Stones
Stick thin celebs are ruining the world for the rest of us!
Okay, maybe that’s an overly dramatic statement, but I can’t possibly be alone in my loathing of the endless media parade of size -0 celebs and models, right? Magazines, entertainment shows, gossip (aka news) sites, they all feature skeletal skinny women in impossibly tight outfits that normal-sized women avoid like the plague. The scene is grating on me; my appreciation for slim and trim is being overshadowed by my resentment toward a more ridiculous unnatural standard.
Don’t get me wrong, I’ve spent many, many years longing for a better body (even when I was skinny and didn’t know it) and have logged hours and hours dieting and working out, but I’m finally realizing that the ideal weight and size for me is not what many celebs are flaunting (yes especially you, Ms. Beckham!). And, for the first time I see that style isn’t a size, it’s a state of being.
Browsing through pictures of celebs who attended the MTV Movie Awards I was so thrilled to see a picture of Nikki Blonsky. Here she looks beautiful and healthy. Her dress has a paisley print in sublime colors, flowing A-line shape, kerchief hem, halter-style neck, black bust de-emphasizing top and flattering empire waist. The black cropped/bolero style sweater is an appropriate and demure addition.

Regardless of whether this is the right look for an awards show, it’s something real women can wear, and that’s what I love about it. It’s not pretentious, just pretty.
I don’t know about you, but I certainly have the ‘stones’ to say that stick thin wannabes can kiss my big, white, butter laden ass. Women of all sizes can be stylish and beautiful.
Inside Rue La La
Are you a member of Rue La La? If so, tell us what you think of the site and the shopping. If not, let me give ya the scoop.
“Rue La La is an exclusive online destination of premier brand, private sale Boutiques that are open just two to three days each. Joining is free, but you must be sponsored by an existing Member.”
Fortunately I’m a member of Rue La La (I believe I was initially invited because I’m also a member of SmartBargains.com SmartShoppers Club--yes, I'm a recovering online shopping addict). The site uses the allure of well-known designer brands, good sale prices, limited quantities and members-only access to its advantage. The anticipation of upcoming sales and the limited-time-only offerings create a fun, competitive shopping experience. May the best shopper (or quickest clicker) win!
Each designer featured on Rue La La has their own boutique that is open for a specific amount of time. The collections may be previewed before the opening, but nothing can be purchased until the boutique is officially open. Notices are sent out via email announcing new events and reminders are delivered when a boutique opens (a very good thing since I can't keep track of all the promo emails I get!).
Most recently the site featured Calvin Klein swimwear. The bikinis, tankinis and one-piece suits normally retail for over $100 but at Rue La La they were at least half-off (some were only $47). You can actually find some reasonable prices and decent savings.
Other designers featured have included Prada, Vera Bradley, Kay Unger and many others you’d recognize in a heart beat. Not everything is going to be “inexpensive”. Let’s face it, unless it’s a fake, Prada is never cheap, but if you have the dinero (or a really generous benefactor) you can at least get a good deal (and feel like a super saavy shopper). What’s not to like about that?
I have yet to purchase anything from Rue La La, but I seriously enjoy browsing and dreaming of limitless spending!

Stylin'--we've all got to start somewhere
Okay, for the sake of full disclosure, I’m sitting here clad in Champion work out pants, v-neck t-shirt, girly baseball cap, with my hair in a ponytail and no makeup. Pretty much I’m the poster child for “What not to Wear.” It’s tragic really. My only defense is that I’m not going out in public, except to take out the garbage and possibly for a sweaty walk along the river.
I must also confess I don’t have the greatest wardrobe right now. I’m ‘between jobs’ (translation: poor as hell) and trying to lose weight I’ve gained over the last three years (slow painful process that screws with buying properly fitted clothing). But, I love and covet clothes, shoes, jewelry, handbags and all the other stuff that goes along with looking fabulous. I’ve been an avid shopper (my credit card companies can attest to that) and student of fashion (hours spent drooling over Vogue, InStyle and tons of internet shopping and style sites) for many, many moons.
Fortunately my goal with this blog is not to just espouse my own ideas and opinions about trends, great buys, and fabulous essentials, but also to encourage you to share your insights and ideas. I’m certain many of you experience similar fashion frustrations as I do and yet also have happy tales to tell about stunning bargains you're able to hunt down and where the rest of us can find them. So don’t hold back. Share the love, show some style!
