Color Fail

Two trends (bright colors and tights) walk into this bar . . . sounds like a joke right? Well, if you’re a woman of my age (let’s just say that’s over 35 and skip the details) putting those two trends together, ON YOUR LEGS, can be a joke.

Selecting which fashion trends to follow can be tricky business, particularly as you age. And, I’ll admit, I still feel 29 so there are times when I’m tempted to dress like a twenty-something. Fortunately there are gentle and not so gentle reminders (comments from friends, what not to wear TV shows, magazine tips, etc.) that not all trends are meant for ALL women. Age, size, shape, coloring—all should be factored in; but I know personally that my better judgment can easily be blinded by something “cute”. So, if all else fails, use of a MIRROR before walking out the door should be your stop-gap.

I found a prime example of when it’s appropriate and when it’s a fashion fail for a woman to wear brightly colored tights or leggings. This feature is from MSN’s Lifestyle section:

Light or bright-colored leggings: White leggings or ones in any candy-colored shade, are best left to the teenaged set. Not only will light colors call attention to your lower half (and make even shapely legs look heavy), but it’s just not a very sophisticated style choice. On the other hand, Krupp gives the thumbs-up to dark leggings. “Black leggings worn under a dress that’s just a little too short or too sheer to wear alone looks youthful without looking too young,” she says. And you don’t have to opt only for black—any dark color (black, brown, dark gray or navy) is an all age-appropriate choice.
